- Fadden Pines Schools' Cross Country:
The 2025 season commenced on Sunday 4 May. We had a record of almost 90 people registering
on the day,
with almost 100 participating in the four events, 750m, 1250m, 2000m and 2500m. Results for
this year's
competition are available at fadp2025.html.
More runners are welcome and the first race (750m) kicks off at 2:30pm on Sundays for the
rest of the
season.
- 2024 SCT Annual Turkey Run Results!
SCT's annual Xmas Turkey run was held on Sunday, 1 December at Fadden Pines. Once again the
courses were
designed by Jim White, using mostly very twisty single trails through the pine forest. We
were lucky with
the weather, a clap of thunder as we were setting the course, but the storm passed to the
north. The
running surface was excellent, in spite of the steady rain on Saturday.
There was a 1km race for children, won by Ellie Potter in 5:59.0, just 0.98 seconds away
from her guessed
time!
The Turkey Run Races were held on a 2.077 km loop, 4.154 km for the two-lap event. Winners
of the vouchers
were Simon Hosking, just 1.11 seconds from his guessed time, ahead of Darcy Morrison (5.95
secs) and
Estrid Helgstedt (8.19 secs). The lucky draw Turkey Voucher winner was Matilda. Thanks all
for attending
and see you next year!

- Fadden Pines Schools' Cross Country 2023!
Hi everyone,
The weather has cooled off and autumn is here. That means that Fadden Pines Cross Country
season will be
starting soon. We are back again with the same time, place and format - starting on Sunday
30 April and
running every Sunday through to 6 August.
As with last year, we will be beginning the runs at 2:30pm each Sunday with four runs at
approximately the
following times:
2:30pm - 750m
2:40pm - 1250m
2:55pm - 2000m
3:10pm - 2500m
As always, any kid who can walk or run the distance is welcome to participate at a distance
that suits
their age and fitness level. We can recommend a distance when you turn up if you are not
sure. Results
will be posted here within 48 hours of the event.
Prices for this season will remain the same as the last few years. If you pay for the whole
season (12
weeks) it is $30 for the first child in the family, $20 for the second and $10 for the third
(to a maximum
of $60 per family). If you pay weekly, it is $3 / $2 / $1 on the same pattern. Card payments
will be
possible this year, but cash will still be faster for us.
Finally, please turn up at least 15 mins before your first race so we can get registrations
sorted.
We hope to see you all on Sunday 30 April.
Cheers,
Ryan
- 2022 SCT Annual Turkey Run Results!
SCT's annual Xmas Turkey run was held on Sunday, 4 December at Fadden Pines. Once again the
courses were
designed by Jim White, on bike and footpaths due to long grass and rough condition of the
trails. There
was a 1km race for children, won by Ali Roff in 6:01.1, just 6 seconds away from her guessed
time.
The Turkey Run Races were held on a 2.33 km loop, 4.66 km for the two-lap event. Winners of
the Runners
Shop vouchers were Josh Grocott (3.2 seconds), Nigel England (4.8 seconds) and Lorna England
(6.1
seconds). The lucky draw Turkey Voucher winner was Beau Collis. Thanks all for attending and
see you next
year!

- Kelsey-Lee Barber, World Champion! Again!
Kelsey-Lee Barber is a dual World
Champion, winning gold in the Women's Javelin at Hayward Field, Oregon on Saturday morning,
23 July (our
time)! It was on her third throw that she took the lead in the competition with 66.91
metres. Kelsey-Lee
became the first Australian since Cathy Freeman to defend a World Title. She finished ahead
of the USA's
Kara Winger (64.05) and Japan's Haruka Kitaguchi (63.27). Australia's Mackenzie Little
placed 5th (63.22)
after leading the competition following the first round.
Afterwards, Kelsey-Lee said "I will be honest in saying I wanted to do it. I wanted it
for a really
long time. It's been part of my dreams within this sport. I think about a month ago, I
nailed it down. I
chatted to (husband and coach) Mike and said, 'I can do this, I can win the world
championships.' I had
this self-belief that drove my training and I really felt it from there."
- 2021 Annual Turkey Fun Run Results!
SCT's annual Xmas Turkey Run was held on Sunday, 5 December, at Fadden Pines. There were two
runs this
year, a one kilometre event (and prize giving for the Fadden Pines winter cross country
season) and a
2.3/4.6 kilometre event, both held in unusually cool conditions.
The courses were both on bike paths due to muddy conditions in the forest areas. Courses
were designed by
Jim White.
After the 1k race, the Fadden Pines School's results were announced as follows:
Girls: U7 Holy Family, U9 Holy Family, U11 St Clare of Assisi, U13 Trinity Christian,
U15 Not
Awarded.
Boys: U7 Holy Family, U9 Holy Family, U11 Trinity Christian School, U13 St Clare of
Assisi, U15
Campbell High.
Joshua Prstec was awarded the Mike Sexton Trophy.
Runners Shop vouchers for the three people guessing closest to their finish time were
awarded, the winner
Jim White (!) guessing just 0.9 seconds away from the actual time. The major 'turkey'
voucher prize of $75
was won by Isaac Muscat who was closest to a random time. There were many 'lucky draw'
prizes handed out
to participants. Thanks all for participating and we hope to see you (and your friends)
around the same
time next year.

World
Champion Kelsey-Lee Barber has become SCT's first Olympic medalist, winning the javelin
bronze medal at
the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games! Supporters held their breaths as they watched a close and
exciting
competition on Friday evening, 6 August at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo. Coached by husband
Mike,
Kelsey-Lee's 4th round throw saw her in the bronze medal position. In the final round she
threw the spear
64.56 metres to come within 10 centimetres of the silver medal. Go Kelsey-Lee! The gold
medal was won by
China's Shiying Liu with 66.34m, and silver won by Poland's Maria Andrejczyk with
64.61m.
Speaking to Channel Seven after the competition, Kelsey-Lee said: "I love my
event, I can't
tell you how much fun I was having out there tonight. It's this weird focus,
determination I just thrive
off. I love it, I love being out here! There were moments this year when I wasn't even
sure if I was
going to make it here, let alone medal. I worked hard and we found a
way."
- SCT's Tokyo 2020 Olympians!
"With the Olympics starting this week I would like to congratulate our two club
Olympians: Kelsey-Lee
Barber and Angie Blackburn. It is an amazing result for our club to have two members
representing
Australia at Tokyo.
Kelsey's javelin competition begins in the qualification round in the morning session on Wed
3 Aug, with
the final on the evening of Fri 6 Aug. Angie will be running in the Women's 4 x 400m relay -
with the
heats in the evening session on Thurs 5 Aug. We'll be watching and cheering them both
on."
Ryan
The following is quoted from the Athletics Australia team
page for the
Tokyo Olympics:
Kelsey-Lee Barber:
Kelsey has a medal of every colour Bronze at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Silver
at the 2018
Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, and Gold at the 2019 World Championships in Doha.
But she would dearly like to elevate her fortunes at Olympic level after finishing 28th in
the qualifying
round of the Rio Games only the top 12 move through to the final.
Considering her throw of 66.56m to become IAAF World Champion in 2019 would have won her
Gold in Rio 2016,
Barber is well and truly in the ball park. Kelsey-Lee is currently ranked world No.1 on IAAF
list (as of
6/7/21). Her PB is 67.70m in 2019.
Angeline Blackburn:
Angie began her track career at the age of 10, ignited by a dream of Olympic glory after
seeing strong
Indigenous representation at the Sydney 2000 Games.
A proud Monero Ngarigo and Yuin woman from East Gippsland in Victoria, took great strides
towards that
happening in 2019.
In Canberra that January she set a PB for the 400m (52.71s) and then a month later again
in the national
capital she set a 200m PB (24.15).
In June Angie was a member of the 4x400m relay team that took Gold at the Oceania
Championships in
Townsville.
It's not as if success has come late. Angie was an outstanding junior athlete finishing 6th
in the 400m
final at the IAAF 2008 World U20 Championships. The Australian 4x400m team took Bronze three
days
later.
She is a three-time Australian junior champion over 400m (2005, '07, '08). After taking a
break from the
sport due to years of injury from over-training and medical misdiagnosis, Angie re-emerged
in 2016 and
within two years, cemented herself as a 400m runner to watch, placing fifth at the 2018
Commonwealth Games
trials. Angie is one of 16 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander athletes competing in 11
sports in Tokyo
the largest group of First Nations athletes to be selected for an Australian Olympic
team.
- 2020 Annual Turkey Fun Run Results!
SCT's annual Xmas Turkey Run was held on Sunday, 13 December, at Fadden Pines. The run
started at 4.30PM
in pleasantly mild and sunny conditions.
The course lap distance was 2050 metres (4.1k for 2 laps) with people having the option of
completing 1 or
2 laps. Participants walked or ran without the aid of a watch or GPS device. The course was
mostly off
road using dirt paths and single tracks through the pines, designed by Jim
White.
Runners Shop
vouchers for the three people guessing closest to their finish time were awarded, the winner
Phil Simpson
guessing just 2.0 seconds away from the actual time. The major 'turkey' voucher prize was
won by Nigel
England for guessing closest to 2 minutes 30 seconds away from a correct time. Thanks all
for
participating and we hope to see you (and your friends) around the same time next year.

- Remembering Mike Sexton:
South Canberra
Tuggeranong is sad to announce that club stalwart and Life Member, Mike Sexton, passed away
on Sunday 25
October 2020 at the age of 68 after a multi-year battle with multiple myeloma — a
blood cancer.
Officially, Mike was Treasurer at SCT for the best part of two decades — and for much
of that time
he carried the Secretary's duties as well. In practice, he was a backbone of the club who
picked up any
tasks that needed doing cheerfully and would always pitch in without ever wanting to be
thanked. He
invariably had a smile and a cheerful anecdote. His commitment extended beyond official club
duties,
including tutoring or helping out athletes through schooling or other commitments.
His most enduring
legacy will be his commitment to the Fadden Pines Cross Country Series that we run as a
club. Mike was
always there to set out the course, cheered on all the kids, organised the special pizza or
bbq days and
painstakingly organised certificates for all the children at the end of the season. While he
kept an eye
out on the talented kids, he was always most impressed by those who came along, persevered
and kept
turning up. The club instituted a perpetual Mike Sexton Trophy for the active participation
this year in
his honour.
A typical example of Mike's character is that, when the club wanted to award Mike with Life
Membership in
2017, the Committee was obliged to make the decision at a meeting that Mike couldn't attend.
He would have
vetoed any decision and possibly refused to accept it.
Around
the club, his favourite story
about his time on the committee was to recount his thoughts on receiving a letter from a
young javelin
thrower who had ambitions to make the Commonwealth Games team. He would recount how he
thought Kelsey-Lee
Roberts was dreaming and how happy he was to have been wrong. We wouldn't have had a World
Champion in the
club without Mike.
Mike is survived by his wife Lorraine, four children and five grand-children. He will be
greatly missed
around the club but his cheerful commitment to getting everything done behind the scenes
will remain an
inspiration to us all.
A memorial page has been set up by Mike's family at www.michaeljohnsexton.com for friends to
read and
contribute memories of Mike for publication.
- 2019 Annual Turkey Fun Run Results!
SCT's annual Xmas Turkey Run was held on Sunday, 8 December, at Fadden Pines. The run
started at 4.30PM in
warm conditions with the smoke haze from bushfires not too bad.
The course lap distance was 1.6k (2.3k for 2 laps) with people having the option of
completing 1 or 2
laps. The course was all off road using dirt paths and single tracks through the pines,
designed by Jim

- Roberts and Frew win Vikings' Annual Sports Awards:
Congratulations to Kelsey-Lee Roberts for winning the 2018 Senior Vikings Award and Connor
Frew the junior
(U18) award at the recent Vikings Group Awards Dinner. Kelsey-Lee also recently competed
at the
Australian Athletics Championships and won silver with a throw of 62.21m which has secured
her an
automatic Commonwealth Games qualifier and a place on the Australian team at the Gold Coast
in
April.
We should congratulate Michael
Hosking on making the Commonwealth Games team - he was an SCT junior and member
until he moved from
Canberra in his early 20s. Michael placed second Australian behind Dane Bird-Smith in the
recent
Australian 20km Race Walking Championships with a PB of 1:23:10 and is an automatic
nomination for the
Commonwealth Games team.

SCT's famous 'Great Tuggie Turkey Run' will be held again this year. The date to remember is
Sunday 11th
December 2016 with the event starting at 9.00 AM.
There are two distances available to run or walk, approximately 4 kilometres or 2
kilometres. The exact
distances will be revealed on the morning of the event. A 'turkey run' is a race where you
run (or walk)
without the aid of a watch or GPS. You nominate your estimated finishing time beforehand and
the winners
are the people who finish closest to their estimated time.
Prizes are gift vouchers to the Runners Shop in Canberra:
1st place - $150.
2nd place - $100.
3rd place - $50.
Random secret time prize - A Christmas Turkey from Chisholm Butchers.
Entry is by gold coin donation on the day and will be taken from 8.00 AM. Results (times and
places) will
be published on the SCT website and Facebook page.
Location of the event is the Fadden Pines Picnic Area on Bugden Avenue in Fadden, Canberra.
- Grand Final for Fadden Pines 2016:
The 2016 Fadden Pines cross country season wrapped up on Sunday afternoon with some tight
handicap racing
in beautiful August sunshine. The handicap events brought out the best of the children
racing, with most
of them posting their best times of the season.
The 750m handicap was dominated by the two youngest competitors with 4 year old
Alexandra Young
just getting past her 3 year old cousin Heidi Young with about 5m to go.
The 1250m handicap was lead home by Nicholas Wawn and Sebastian Young who both ran
PBs of about a
minute on the course. The top 8 runners in this all set PBs in some close racing.
The 2000m saw newcomer (to Fadden Pines and to Canberra) Honey Proudfoot lead the
field home after
what turned out to be some generous handicapping. Sebastian C Young was second home.
The 2500m turned into the Hughes family race with father Andrew winning from daughter
Claire and
son Alex stormed through the field to claim a narrow 4th. Alex was denied 3rd by a
spectacular final
sprint by Aislinn Ryan but he ran the fastest 2.5km at Fadden Pines for many years.
Congratulations to all the competitors both on Sunday and through the whole season. It was
great you could
take part and we hope you'll be back next year with all your friends.
The final part of the day was the presentations for the schools pointscore competitions over
the season.
The winners were as follows:
Girls
U7 Holy Family
U9 St Francis of Assisi
U11 St Francis of Assisi
U13 Holy Family
U15 Canberra Girls Grammar School
Boys
U7 Theodore Primary
U9 Calwell Primary, Forrest Primary and Isabella Plains Primary
U11 Canberra Grammar School
U13 Alfred Deakin High and Torrens Primary
U15 Alfred Deakin High
- Fadden Pines is ALWAYS on!
No matter how bad the weather! If it's raining, turn up and you might win! On Sunday 5 June,
Jim White
braved the flooding conditions to win the 2,500 metre Open race in a time of 13:58. Well
done Jim! The 2016 results page for Fadden Pines has now been
updated. Have a look and see
how you're going. If it's flooding again next week, bring your gum boots and have a run.
Good fun!

- 2015 Annual Turkey Fun Run Results!
SCT's annual Xmas Turkey Run for 2015 was held on Sunday, 13 December, at Fadden Pines. The
event was a
great success with all participants (and helpers) enjoying a lovely sunny morning. The
winner of 'the
bird' (a frozen turkey from Erindale Meats) was Scott Marshall, selected at random by our
trusty computer.
Course designer Jim White won the event, with an estimated time less than one second away
from his actual
time! All participants ran or walked without the aid of watches, GPS devises or
phones.
The course distance was 4.52 kilometres (2 laps), with some people completing 1 lap and
having their time
doubled for the calculation of results. Winners of the 3 major Runners Shop gift vouchers
were: Rohan
Hosking ($150), Jenny Hefford ($100) and Janette Yeung ($50). A selection of photos are
available on SCT's Facebook Page. Thanks
all for participating and
we hope to see you (and your friends) around the same time next year.

- SCT Athletics News - incl scholarship opportunities:
We have had a great start to the summer track season, with SCT
athletes very visible at every meet so far. We would like to extend a
very warm welcome to all of the athletes who have joined our club this
season. We hope you enjoy your time with us and set many personal
bests.
We have still had a few issues with the new membership system and
there are some people who have joined SCT that are not showing up in
our membership list. If you are showing up with SCT for your results
at the track, please let me know so we can sort it out.
A very big congratulations and good luck to all the SCT athletes
selected for the All Schools Championships in Melbourne.
We have had at least 13 athletes selected (noting membership issues
mean I may have missed one or two). Congratulations to Grace Unwin,
Brandon Bardsley, Jacob Church, Colby Eddowes, Tim Fraser, Conner
Frew, Rohan Hosking, Balthazar Lai, Hugh McKenzie, Adrian Plummer,
Keiran Reilly, Jack Wallis, and Gwyllym Young.
Our major sponsor, the Vikings groups, offers annual scholarships for
college and university students who are promising athletes in
affiliated clubs. We have had athletes on scholarship with the Vikings
every year recently. If you are going into college or uni, I have
attached the details and application forms. They need to be submitted
by Monday 7 December and we will write a supporting letter to go with
your application. For more details, send us an email or get in touch
with Peter Hosking - peter.hoskings [AT] gmail.com or 0402 096 664.
Finally, some club information for those who may not have heard it
before. We have club records that can be found on our website (female and male) -
www.sctathletics.com. If you want to claim a record, send us an email
with the details or fill out the linked form.
Also, we offer financial assistance to members to travel to national
and international competitions. For more information, please read the
long standing policy on our website here: http://sctathletics.com/a_policy.html.
Hope to see you all at the track soon.
Cheers,
Ryan
President
- Fadden Pines Handicap Final a great success!
The final event of the 2015 Fadden Pines Schools' Cross Country Season was held on Sunday 23
August. All
four races were run using handicap starts and judging by the results, the
'Tortoise and the Hare' effect produced Personal Best times for many runners. There
was one course record broken, by Kiefer Brennan, with a
time of 7:51.0 for the
boys' 2000 metres.
All runners, parents and helpers enjoyed the day. SCT would like to thank Mike, Ryan, Jane,
Trish
(especially for the BBQ on the day!), Jim (especially for the freshly painted posts marking
the course)
and any other people who helped out during the season. Schools' Team Results will be coming
soon. We're
looking forward to seeing you all (and new friends!) next May for the 2016 season.
- Coaches Association Fees:
The SCT committee has approved payment of
Australian T
& F Coaches Association annual fees for coaches connected with SCT who are actively
coaching SCT
athletes. Contact Mike Sexton for further details.
